AICS–POLIMI Agreement Signed to Strengthen Local Capacities in Cultural Heritage

The cooperation agreement between the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) has been signed within the framework of the EU-funded project “EU for Economic Development – Tourism-led, Local, Economic Development, with a focus on Cultural Heritage.”

This agreement marks an important step toward strengthening local capacities in the management, conservation, and valorisation of cultural heritage in Albania, with a particular focus on the Bylis Archaeological Park (BKAP).

Within the framework of this cooperation, a comprehensive capacity-building programme is planned, which includes:

  • Training sessions on the management of the Bylis–Klos Archaeological Park, restoration, museumisation, archaeology, and related fields, involving 24 professionals and representatives of local institutions, as well as more than 20 additional members of the local community.
  • The development and implementation of health and safety plans, natural disaster risk management, and fire protection measures, potentially supported by external international experts.
  • The organisation of three international conferences focused on Bylis, serving as platforms for the exchange of experiences and best practices at the European level.

The most significant element of the agreement is the establishment of the “Scuola Cantiere”, an innovative on-site training model that combines professional education with hands-on fieldwork. The objective is to involve young professionals, local communities, and visitors through the restoration of one of the mosaics within the Byllis Archaeological Park, thereby increasing the visibility and appreciation of this exceptional cultural asset in this area of Albania.

The AICS–POLIMI agreement confirms the importance of international cooperation and investment in knowledge as a foundation for sustainable local development, through cultural tourism and heritage preservation, made possible thanks to European Union funding.
