Bylis and Klos enter a new phase: Strengthening the Future of Cultural Heritage in Mallakaster

The Archaeological Park of Bylis and Klos is entering a new phase of development following the approval of the Council of Ministers’ decision declaring it an “Immovable Cultural Heritage” site and endorsing its protection and management plan.

This important step goes beyond a formal designation—it represents a concrete investment in preserving and enhancing the future of cultural tourism in the region.

Bylis, one of the largest cities of the Illyrian world, and Klos (ancient Nicaea), a key center of the Koinon of the Bylliones, together offer a unique potential for local development, education, and authentic visitor experiences.

The newly approved plan aims to ensure the preservation of archaeological values and landscape integrity, improve park management, and create greater opportunities for local communities and visitors alike.

In this context, the approval of the park’s territorial boundaries, together with the recruitment of new staff, is expected to significantly strengthen its on-site administration and operational capacity.

The establishment and consolidation of the park are being carried out within the framework of the European Union-funded project “EU for Economic Development – Tourism-led, Local Economic Development, with a focus on Cultural Heritage,” directly linking cultural heritage with local economic development.

With this decision, Bylis and Klos are not only part of the past—but a tangible opportunity for sustainable development and international promotion.
